When to consult

When to consult an orthodontist

The American Association of Orthodontists does not recommend having a first visit before age 7. However, there are certain signs that can indicate the need to consult an orthodontist:

  • Premature or delayed loss of primary (baby) teeth
  • Difficulty chewing
  • Overlapping teeth, lack of space or too much space
  • Trauma to the gums or palate during chewing
  • Teeth too far forward
  • Breathing through the mouth
  • Thumb sucking or object sucking
  • Deviated jaws, too far forward or too far back
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Facial asymmetry
  • Teeth that do not close properly
